The novel opens in the early 20th century with a community gathering aimed at healing Ella, a young woman who returns home after a troubled marriage. Ella, affected by her husband’s appropriation of her culture through a minstrel show, finds herself in a state of despair, stripped of her identity. The Afro-Jamaican religion Myal is invoked to restore her spirit, emphasizing the theme that good can triumph over evil.
